Deck Railing

Deck Railing: Fascia-Mounted Aluminum & Glass Railings and Aluminum Stairs

Enhance your outdoor space with safety, style, and a clear view. Our fascia-mounted aluminum and glass deck railings are a modern, low-maintenance solution that meets the rigorous standards of the British Columbia Building Code (BCBC) while delivering contemporary elegance.

What Is a Fascia-Mounted Railing?

A fascia-mounted railing system is installed on the vertical face (or rim) of your deck’s perimeter rather than on the horizontal surface. This approach maximizes usable deck space and creates a clean, streamlined appearance—ideal for patios, balconies, and elevated decks.

Our systems use durable, powder-coated aluminum posts and tempered safety glass panels, offering a combination of structural integrity, weather resistance, and unobstructed views of your surroundings.

Why Choose Fascia-Mounted Aluminum & Glass Railings?

  • Unobstructed Views – Perfect for properties with scenic vistas, lakeside, or mountainside locations.

  • Space-Saving Design – No interference with deck surface area or furniture layout.

  • Modern Aesthetics – Clean lines and architectural appeal suitable for contemporary homes.

  • Corrosion-Resistant Materials – Aluminum and tempered glass require minimal maintenance, even in coastal BC environments.

  • Code-Compliant Safety – Designed and engineered to meet or exceed all relevant BC building code requirements.

BC Building Code Compliance (2024 Standards)

Safety and compliance are paramount in all our installations. Our fascia-mounted aluminum and glass railing systems meet the structural and safety criteria outlined in the British Columbia Building Code (BCBC), including:

1. Height Requirements (BCBC 2018 – Section 9.8.8.3):

  • Guardrails are required on decks or balconies that are more than 600 mm (approximately 24 inches) above grade.

  • Minimum height for guardrails:

    • 1070 mm (42 inches) for residential decks (serving dwelling units)

    • 920 mm (36 inches) for interior guardrails, or for exterior platforms less than 1.8 m (6 feet) above grade

2. Load Requirements (BCBC – Table 4.1.5.14):

  • Guard systems must resist a horizontal load of 0.75 kN/m (approximately 50 lbs/ft) applied at the top of the railing.

  • Point loads of 1.0 kN (220 lbs) are also required at specific points, ensuring the railing can withstand individual impacts.

3. Glass Panel Safety:

  • All glass used in guardrails must be tempered or laminated safety glass in accordance with CAN/CGSB-12.1-M.

  • Glass must be engineered to resist both impact and wind loading, and must not shatter into dangerous shards.

4. Fascia-Mounted Hardware Engineering:

  • Structural mounting of fascia brackets must be designed to account for shear and pull-out forces, especially on cantilevered decks.

  • All fasteners must be corrosion-resistant, and ideally stainless steel or hot-dip galvanized, per BCBC durability standards.

Note: In municipalities like Vancouver or Victoria, local codes or permitting processes may introduce additional structural or aesthetic requirements. All our installations are done with appropriate engineer-stamped drawings, if required by local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).
